Snowshoeing is a lot like winter hiking. Snowshoes help you travel over snowy ground, letting you explore forest trails and beautiful mountain scenery at your own pace.

Beginner tip: Choose a short, relatively flat trail and wear warm, waterproof boots. Snowshoeing is easy to learn, but deeper snow can make it a workout!

Whether you’re staying in Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, Truckee, or near Donner Summit, these local areas offer great winter recreation opportunities. Trail availability changes with snowfall and grooming, so check each operator’s current report before heading out.
Just northeast of Tahoe City, Tahoe XC has more than 50 kilometers of groomed winter trails winding through pine forests and offering beautiful views of Lake Tahoe.
Activities: Classic cross-country skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing on permitted routes.
Great for: Beginners through experienced Nordic skiers, scenic forest outings, and visitors staying near Tahoe City.
Trailhead: 925 Country Club Boulevard, Tahoe City.
Located above Tahoe Vista, North Tahoe Regional Park offers forested community trails for winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Portions of its trail network are groomed when conditions and staffing allow.
Activities: Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter walking on appropriate trails.
Great for: Families, casual outings, and visitors staying around Kings Beach or Tahoe Vista.
Local tip: Explore the forest scenery around the Cedar Trail. Snowshoers and walkers should stay to the side of groomed ski tracks.
Location: 6600 Donner Road, Tahoe Vista. There are no ski or snowshoe rentals at the park, so bring your equipment. Parking fees may apply.
Tahoe Donner offers a large Nordic trail network through meadows and forested mountain terrain. When fully open, the center has more than 100 kilometers of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails.
Activities: Classic skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing on designated routes.
Great for: Skiers looking for varied terrain, families wanting a dedicated Nordic center, and visitors staying in Truckee.
Location: Alder Creek Adventure Center, 15275 Alder Creek Road, Truckee. Trail passes are required within the ski area boundary.
Located on Donner Summit near Soda Springs, Royal Gorge is known for its extensive Nordic trail system, open meadows, quiet forests, and Sierra Nevada mountain scenery.
Activities: Classic cross-country skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing along designated and shared routes.
Great for: A full day of exploring, experienced Nordic skiers, and beginners looking for a maintained trail network.
Local tip: Donner Summit can experience different weather and snow conditions than the lake level. Check the Royal Gorge grooming report and access information before making the drive.
Located near downtown Tahoe City, this family-friendly winter park offers approximately four kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails around meadow terrain, along with snowshoeing opportunities when snow conditions allow.
Activities: Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and other seasonal winter recreation.
Great for: First-timers, families with kids, and anyone looking for a shorter winter outing close to downtown Tahoe City.
Location: 251 North Lake Boulevard, Tahoe City. Activity reservations may be recommended or required. Ski and snowshoe trails are dependent on sufficient snowfall.
A quick heads-up: These locations are operated independently of Tahoe Dave’s. Trail access, grooming, weather closures, dog policies, reservations, and fees vary. Always confirm current information with the trail operator before visiting.
A little preparation goes a long way in the Sierra. Here are a few things we recommend before heading out.
Snowfall, grooming, and weather can change quickly. Check the trail operator’s daily report before leaving, especially after storms.
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can warm you up fast. Wear moisture-wicking layers with a wind-resistant or waterproof outer layer.
Carry water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, warm gloves, and a trail map. Let someone know your route and expected return time.
Snowshoers should use designated routes and follow posted trail etiquette. Avoid stepping into groomed classic ski tracks unless permitted.
Some Nordic centers require trail passes, activity reservations, or parking fees. Equipment rentals do not automatically include trail access.
Stay on suitable maintained routes when you’re getting started. Ungroomed mountain terrain may have avalanche hazards and requires additional planning, knowledge, and equipment.
