John’s Pick of the Season…
The Lib Tech Hot Knife is a great example of a modern cambered snowboard. I have been riding one since the beginning of the season and I have really enjoyed its playful nature and solid edge hold. The combination of a softer flex, Magnetraction and Lib Tech’s C3 Camber Dominant Design makes for a board that will hold a great edge, snap out of turns but isn’t a bear at slower speeds. The only chink in the armor might be for those who prefer to ride at maximum speed at all times. Because of the softer flex, it starts to feel a little nervous when straight up bombing. I have never lost the edge in a turn at those higher speeds, but it certainly feels like it is a possibility. I even rode this board in powder and found that it wanted to float more than I expected. I don’t think I would give up my rockered powder board on a deeper day, but I was pleasantly surprised. If I had younger knees I would certainly ride this board in the park. It doesn’t feel catchy at all. If you forced me to pick out the one characteristic of the Hot Knife that stood out above all others, It would be the boards ability to make tight turns with confidence in tight terrain. Whether you find yourself in a chute, mogul field, terrain park or busy holiday groomer there is always enough room for a turn. The Hot knife is a true twin with slight point to the tip and tail. I only mention this because it creates a distinct look that I happen to like a lot. I am also a fan of the graphic. It is classic Lib Tech (please see attached picture) topsheet art. It may not appeal to everyone but probably most. I highly recommend taking a look at the Hot knife if you are in the market for a new board. Consider renting one, to try it yourself first, if you don’t want to just take my word for how good it is.
